| "Scotty" Farewell
James Doohan, the actor who immortalized the charactor of Scotty in the original series. Passed away at his home in Redmond, Washington this morning. He was 85.
Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. (13:30 GMT) with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side. According to Doohan's Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens, the cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease.
Doohan was loved by many people. His kind heart and warm personality where renouned by many convention going fans. With an ability to make all those around him, feel welcome and at ease.
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia. He fought in the Canadian arm during the second World War and was present at the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. During which he lost his middle finger on his right hand. After the war, he persued a career in radio and later television & film. Also known for his skill at foreign languages, it was known that Doohan and Trek creator Gene Roddenberry tried out many different voices for the character of ships engineer. Until Doohan told Roddenberry that "all the worlds bests engineers have been Scottish". Thus Montgomery Scott was born.
Doohan first appear on startrek, in it's second pilot episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before". Which also saw the arrival of William Shatner, as ships captain. He stayed with the series through out it's three seasons and seven feature films. Also contributing to the animated Star Trek series. Providing the voices for Scotty, Lt. Arex and many others.
Before Star Trek, Doohan appeared in other cult shows such as "The Man From U.N.C.L.E", "The Twilight Zone" and "Outer Limits".
Doohan had four children with his first wife Janet Young, two with his second wife, Anita Yagel, and three more with his last wife Wende Braunberger. His youngest daughter Sarah was born only five years ago.
